AMERICAN GIRL CAMP

June 11-15

This camp takes campers back in time with their American Girl dolls!  We will explore and learn about different time periods through the exciting American Girl series and other wonderful books.  Campers can expect to make new things for their dolls, read and write about history and science, all while playing in the outdoors.   Students will learn about adventurous women throughout history.  We will also learn about the American Girl of the year!  Dolls invited to come along!

HARRY POTTER CAMP

June 11-15

Back by popular demand, BookTrails’ will again offer its version of Hogwarts this summer at Harry Potter Camp!  Learn magical potions, the healing property of plants, and play quidditch across ranch fields!  Campers will be sorted into a house and win points towards the House Cup.  Expect to dive into the different legends behind werewolves, centaurs, and other magical creatures.  We will read (or for most, re-read!) the Harry Potter books and other supplementary books that explore adventure and magic.

MAGIC TREEHOUSE CAMP

Calling all Magic Tree House fans!  At this mega-fun camp, we will read many different Magic Tree House books and go on adventures just like Jack and Annie!  Students will learn about what is was like to be a kid during different time periods, just like in the Magic Tree House series!  Write your own Jack and Annie adventure with your fellow campers and transport through time in our own time machine!

HATCHET CAMP

June 18-22
Grades 3-5

Try your hand at wilderness survival skills, just like Brian in The Hatchet!  This camp will allow students to experience many of the skills in the books including shelter building, foraging for edible plants, hanging bear bags, fire safety and basic first aid.  Students will also learn to write their own adventure stories and make primitive crafts, including fishing tackle.  We will read real-life survival tales and discuss different survival strategies.  

This camp includes a camp-out.  Campers are permitted to bring their pocket knives to sign-in on Thursday to be collected and distributed during a supervised whittling session.  Please do not send your child with sentimental items as sometimes they are lost!

LAND OF STORIES CAMP

This camp will explore the popular Land of Stories series!  We will travel with Alex and Connor into the different classic tales and create some new stories of our own!  The camp is all about adventure and imagination as campers will participate in story-themed hikes and explore our camp trails with books in hand.  On our hikes, we will be faced with different puzzles and problems and solve them as a team!  Jump into this popular series with BookTrails!

SPY CAMP

Do you love to be sneaky and stealthy?  Join us at Spy Camp and learn how to be a nature detective!  Students will read Spy Camp, by Stuart Gibbs, a hysterical book about kids who attend camp to learn how to be the perfect spies.  Expect to learn how to make spy devices, how to write in code, and the stories of different spies throughout history.

CAMP SPLASH I

Grades 2-4

This camp is all about cooling down by getting wet! Learn about the different bodies of water around the world and the creatures that call them home. We'll read a variety of books about water adventures and even have a river rafting adventure of our own! Campers will explore the waterways in our Yampa River Valley and try their hands at catching aquatic insects and fish. Before our rafting adventure, students will also learn rafting terms and river etiquette.

Camp Splash II

Grades 4-6

This camp is specially designed for kids who attended Camp Splash 1 last year or have completed the fourth grade. This follow-up camp will focus primarily on water issues and how they impact people in the west. Camp Splash II will concentrate less on the biological elements of water and more on the social impacts and problems facing water as a resource. Students can expect to learn about the first explorers of the Colorado River, the different dam projects throughout history, and the issues facing our community concerning water. We will also learn new ways to conserve water in our own lives. Before our rafting adventure, students will learn rafting terms and river etiquette.  

This camp includes an overnight rafting trip with Camp Splash I students. Students should complete Camp Splash I before Camp Splash II, unless they have completed 4th grade. We raft a section of the Colorado River near State Bridge, CO with a qualified outfitter. Let us know if you have questions.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Camp

July 16-20

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Camp will explore the hysterical series and other fantastic comics.  Campers can expect to learn and tell a lot of jokes, participate in comic construction, and play in the outdoors.

Ultimate Survival Camp

A Series of Small Maneuvers, new titles

 

Campers will get to stay at our overnight site— The Reading Ranch! Ultimate Survival Camp will spend the week learning advanced survival skills such as building your own survival site, foraging and cooking food, and many other pointers to master outdoor survival. We will read many books together during the week, including new books such as A Series of Small Maneuvers and classics like My Side of the Mountain.  Campers will also get to participate in hikes to neighboring peaks and swim in Steamboat Lake, which is a 5 minute trip from our site.

Camp Half Blood/Camp Magnus Chase

July 23-27
Grades 3-5

Main Book: Lightning Thief #1 and Magnus Chase #1

 

Campers may choose the Camp Half Blood track, or Magnus Chase track.  Some activities will be grouped together.  

From Rick Riordan's popular The Lightning Thief series, this is your chance to experience Camp Half-Blood as the children of the Olympians did themselves! Take part in epic games of capture the flag on local ranches and learn more about Greek Mythology.  Campers can expect to participate in intense battles, missions, experiments, and plenty of nature exploration. Alternatively, campers may decide to focus on the Magnus Chase series, where we will spend time learning about norse mythology.

Camp Summits

July 23-27

Campers will get to stay at our overnight site— The Reading Ranch! Camp Summits will be all about climbing mountains.  Students will learn the basics of how to safely summit peaks, master outdoor skills, and climb some of the surrounding peaks of the Zirkel Mountains. We will read Gordon Korman’s Everest series along with other mountain-climbing books.  We will also learn about famous mountain climbers and summits around the world.

Little House Camp

If you love the Little House on the Prairie series, this camp is for you!  We will read Little House on the Prairie together and get to try some of the homesteading skills like outdoor cooking, reading maps, and primitive crafts.  Learn about the first settlers who traveled west with their families and the adventures that they experienced.

Campers will get to stay at our overnight site— The Reading Ranch!  Calling all animal and wildlife lovers! This camp is focused on learning about the different wildlife that shares Routt National Forest with our camp. Campers will learn basic animal tracking skills and how to move undetected through the forest. We will learn how to identify tracks and signs of various native animals and plants through exciting wildlife hikes around camp— we will even participate in a night hike to look for nocturnal animals!

OUTLAWS CAMP

Adventure into the wild west with Outlaws Camp!  This camp is all about cowboys and cowgirls as we will explore local ranchlands and learn about the first settlers in our area.  We will also spend the week reading and learning about ranch animals and the wildlife living around Steamboat.  This camp will read the hysterical and mysterious Hank the Cowdog series.
